Time for Women’s Tennis

I’ve just read on Google news that Serena Williams has ‘crashed out’ of the French Open after the first round. I had to re-read the headlining news again before finally realising that the article was no belated April fools joke. Williams was beaten by a little-known Frenchwoman who goes by the name of Virgine Razzano in 3 straight sets. Williams’ defeat comes after last years’ US Open final loss to Samantha Stosur, and her 4th round exit in the Australian Open earlier this year. It’s such a shame for Serena to fall from grace, especially in the public eye - her outburst during the US Final last year was no exception. Serena, along with her sister Venus - famously known as ‘The Williams Sisters’ dominated the WTA Tour for nearly a decade, until new faces such as Maria Sharapova burst onto the scene.

The tennis world is rapidly moving with the times and in the WTA Tour, winning 1 Grand Slam doesn’t guarantee you the #1 spot: any one of the top 5 players would be dubbed #1 in the World at any given time. Now It seems that the Williams’ dominance in women’s Tennis has come to an end. You may never know, I may be wrong.

I’m dedicating this post to the lovely Ivi Adamou. Yes people, I’m still blogging about Eurovision. Get over it. Now It’s over, all the songs start to chart in countries all around Europe. In my country, La La Love is currently #46 on the iTunes chart (I do check) and we didn’t even give her any points. In my earlier post I told you that this song is #2 on my Eurovision faves this year. Now the rest of the country is starting to realise how amazing (and catchy) this song is, not to mention her beauty. We la la love you

I don’t care about people’s perception of this performance, Loreen is amazing: she’s a damn good singer, her performance is sublime and she is definitely going to win Eurovision 2012. Smell ya laters, haters

EUROVISION

Yes it’s that time of year again. Eurovision is one of the highlights of my year. It’s a shame it’s slap bang in the middle of the exam season, but it’s such a good reason to procrastinate!

I’ve been an avid Eurovision fan for as long as I can remember. My earliest memory was watching Katrina and the Waves win in 1997. The song is, arguably, one of the most memorable Eurovision songs: “Let our love shine a light in every corner of our hearts…” However, my all time favourite song is Helena Paparizou’s My Number One which won in 2005, Eurovision’s 50th anniversary. Despite this brilliant songs winning the contest in the past, Eurovision is, and always will be, famed for being a bit of an extravaganza, with participants ranging from Finnish rock ‘gods’, Ukranian drag queens, and this year, the Russian Babushki Grannies getting you to “come and dance” while they wait for their cookie to be taken out of the oven.

Eurovision has experienced it all, and each year the contest is destined to be a spectacle, whether its the good, the bad, the ugly, the beautiful, the weird or just any old act that looks as though they’ve just partied at a gay bar turning up from 42 different countries. Even though Eurovision is a dying concept here in the UK, there are still a few of us die-hard fans who love celebrating the best of what Europe has to offer one Saturday every year. Thank goodness the rest of Europe seem just as enthusiastic as i am!

As for this year’s contest, here are my favourite songs in order of preference:

1. Loreen - Euphoria (Sweden): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t5qURKt4maw

2. Ivi Adamou - La La Love (Cyprus): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MSrS-2cunM4

I remember the day when I learnt how to make a paper crane. I was in Year 9 at Art and Design class with one of the nicest teachers I’ve ever had. He was a lovely chap, teaching us all sorts of wacky and crazy things. This was probably one of the most most memorable, along with making paper mache, and allowing an A Level student to sculpture my hand. It was wonderful; back in the day when exams were not the be all and end all. Looking at this photo reminded me of those days.

And I don’t know how it gets better than this, you take my hand and drag me head first, fearless

Oh Man City!

I’ve just popped back on the computer after witnessing the best final day to a Premier League season ever. And I mean ever. I watched the Manchester City v QPR from just before half time: City looked to have comfortably secured a 1-0 victory and the PL title. (via goal difference)

However this is the the Premier League, so the unexpected does tend to happen. QPR decided to score 2 cheeky goals in a space of 10 minutes to put themselves ahead, while Man United continued to dominate their match against Sunderland to secure themselves victory. (which they did manage to do) At this moment in time United looked to have secured the title; I myself believed so and I even began to lose hope in City.To be quite frank, I think everyone who was rooting for City today began to, except the most dedicated of City fans, Manchini and the players themselves. You could see the fire and the passion burning in their eyes that you don’t see everyday - you could really tell that City wanted the title.

Surprisingly enough City did manage to turn things around. As soon as Balotelli came on City dominated QPR, It was just a case of scoring two vital goals that would cement it. Two more goals City, how hard could it be? I decided to focus my attention on a bit of reading of an interview with Mollie King on Fabulous magazine instead of facing the reeling suspense of the footie. What a mistake that was - City managed to pull a goal back. The suspense continued…

Baking cakes for mid-lesson snacks has become a regular routine for most of my lessons. Now I’ve become rather obsessed with them. My baking ranges from chocolate brownies and cupcakes (as shown above) to Madeira and sponge cakes. Yes, I do sound a bit mad (some might argue that I’m already mad enough as it is), but I am a woman and I’ve learnt to appreciate the art of baking.

My culinary skills have improved as a result: I used to rely on my parents or dinner ladies to whip up some food for me to eat. Food at my previous school was barely tolerable, and living there for 24 hours a day, 7 days a week made matters worse. Being able to bake for friends, family and peers is a challenge I take quite seriously. If my school wasn’t so hyped up about baking and cakes, I probably wouldn’t be able to operate an oven or understand the importance of pre-heating.
